It all began back in 1951, when 16 year old Larry Russell from Albemarle, North Carolina began to dream of one day owning his own restaurant. His Mom and Dad had owned Russell's Truck Stop and Grill in Davidson County. The following year, at age 17, while working a full-time job, Larry began a 12 year stint as a cook in the Army Reserves and National Guard. This is where he picked up the nickname, "Chef", from his good friend Rudy Long.
It was during this time that he met and married Mary Fesperman, started a family, and began to fulfill his dream. He had relatives in the Sandhills and had always loved the area, so he and Mary decided to make Southern Pines their new home and "Russell's Fish House" their new venture. That was September, 1965.
What started with $1,000 in savings and a $10,000 loan turned into Larry and Mary's life's work. Nearing a half century in business, the couple are still going full speed. Over the years they have met thousands of people and have made scores of friends. Many young employees have had parents and even grandparents that have worked at Russell's.
Now the oldest Restaurant in Southern Pines, some things have never changed like our commitment to serve great food at a fair price, and to provide excellent, courteous service to every individual.
Whether you're dining in, ordering carryout, or having us cater an event, the staff at "Russell's" wants you to know that we appreciate your business. And please, tell a friend!
