The laws are there it is the courts and lawyers that mess it up. Why put them in jail if you let them out the next day.

"There are two things I'd like to see tried before we go charging down the path of additional gun control.
    1. Enforce the laws we already have. It doesn't make sense to me to claim we need more laws because the ones we have aren't working when we don't enforce them all.
    2. Address the root cause of why we shoot each other."
I'd be happy to start there. The problem is, a lot of the people who suggest #1 only do so when someone mentions gun control, and as soon as that prospect dies down, they go back to supporting policies and politicians that make enforcement nearly impossible, like cutting ATF funding.

Another inconvenient fact is that NO gun, ever, under it's own power, got up and shot someone. There is always human involvement.

There are two things I'd like to see tried before we go charging down the path of additional gun control:
    1. Enforce the laws we already have. It doesn't make sense to me to claim we need more laws because the ones we have aren't working when we don't enforce them all.
    2. Address the root cause of why we shoot each other. While the rates per capita have been going DOWN the last year or two, the rates are still higher than they were years ago... what changed in us as a society to cause this? I think working on THAT would make society better as a whole, while saving lives. JMO.

Way to care for your fellow man. Your comment makes it sound like everyone in Durham is a criminal and we all need to die. Excuse me, but I've lived in Durham my whole life and happen to think I'm a good person who doesn't deserve to be "killed off" as you so eloquently put it. There are bad people everywhere in the world, some places have more than others, but it doesn't make the PLACE bad. I love Durham and am proud to be from here. Your thick mindset produces nothing but escalated bigotry.

And you did exactly what I predicted. I didn't say anything specific about gun control. I just said that if anyone else did, people would rage about it. You did, and w/o even needing me to say anything specific about it. Why are you afraid of an honest, calm, thoughtful discussion about guns w/o resorting to hyperbole?

Let's back up here, below is what was said in the very first comment:

"if someone dares mention gun control, they'll get all frenzied and rage against it."

A little more honesty would be much appreciated.

"...what have you done for Durham lately?"
I'm a teacher in Durham, resident of a humble section of Durham, director of 2 different service-oriented youth groups, run a community farm with my wife, and I attend an inner city church that is heavily focused on social justice.

I acknowledged that my depiction of conservatives was an extreme exaggeration, but I also did so as an example within the context of conservatives doing the same thing wrt liberals. It does no good for either side to make up such lies about the other, and that's what you did first, w/o any sign of self-awareness, when you represented liberals as people who want to take away your guns. You didn't even need much prodding to go there, either.

Jackaroe123, thank you for your thoughtfulness, eloquence, and honesty.

As a person to the left of what most people think of when they hear the word "liberal," I have made an effort to monitor and modify how I think, speak, and write about people with whom I disagree. I try to avoid absolutes and hyperbole, as they, especially when paired with insults, get in the way of honest discussion.

"Conservatives only care about themselves, and they especially don't care about people of color"

You should be glad to know how wrong you are. what have you done for Durham lately?
