For years, Todd Snider has been one of the most beloved country-folk singers in the country. In the nineties, he had a top forty hit with Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues, which gave national audiences the first taste of his brilliantly insightful songwriting voice: at once satirical and sincere, Snider was an American original from the start. Since the release of the 2004 album East Nashville Skyline, though, Sniders star really started to rise. Hailed by critics as one of the top albums of the year, East Nashville Skyline was followed by The Devil You Know and The Excitement Plan. Sniders songs took on George W. Bush (You Got Away With It) and Americas recent fascination with foreign war (Mission Accomplished), along with a host of more intimate topics: married love, devotion to old friends, memories of foolish youth. As good as Sniders albums have beenand hes been compared to Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, John Prine, and dozens of other household nameshis in-concert monologues are even better. A live Snider show is a loose-limbed, informal experience: its often just him and a guitar, and he introduces his songs with stories that can stretch to as long as twenty minutes. These stories can be personal memoir, shaggy-dog comedy, rueful memories of his troubles with drugs and alcohol, or sharp-eyed observation from his years as a touring musician; no matter what the case, they display Sniders boundless charm and insight. As hes allowed his storytelling to evolve along with his music, Snider has become not only a modern-day Dylan but a modern-day Will Rogers, an everyman whose intelligence, self-deprecation, experience, andabove allsense of humor makes him a uniquely American character.
