A woman was shot and killed and her mother was injured in a drive-by shooting at a Garner apartment complex off of Curtiss Drive on Friday night, police said.

The shooting call came in just before 9:30 p.m. at Delmont Apartments, police said.

Latoya McNeil, 31, died, and Angela Harding, 48, was taken to a hospital with injuries authorities described as not life-threatening.

Both mother and daughter lived at the complex and were in the same vehicle arriving home when they were shot, police said. A young child was also in the car but was not hurt in the shooting.

A family friend, who asked not to be identified, said McNeil was a fun person who did not deserve to be gunned down.

"Why? We don't know. Her life is just gone," she said.

Investigators on Saturday were following up on a tip that two men were spotted running from the scene after the shots were fired.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 919-772-8810.

"If they could reach out and tell us any information they have, even if they don't believe it's important, it may help the investigation," said Lt. Wayne Moore.
