RALEIGH, N.C. — An Affordable Care Act Enroll-a-Thon was held at Chavis Community Center Saturday morning to help people navigate the heath insurance marketplace.

Monday, March 31 is the enrollment deadline to sign up for coverage, however the Obama administration extended the deadline for people who have started the process, but have not completed it.

Fifteen navigators were on hand at the event to provide in-person enrollment assistant and answer questions.

"My main questions was would I be able to afford a monthly premium," said Eloise Dowtin.

Dowtin, 61, has not had heath insurance since 1992 . She said that was the last time she qualified for her employer's heath plan. Dowtin, a diabetic with high blood pressure, said heath coverage has not been an option, until now.

"It's a blessing because with my pre-existing conditions I have not been able to get any insurance even though I've tried," she said.

The White House said more than 6 million Americans have signed up for heath insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

Rodney McKoy, a single father of six, has health insurance. He said he attended the event Saturday to compare coverage costs.

"Those medical bills are piling up, piling up," McKoy said. "I think it's very helpful."

According to the law, most people must have to sign up for health coverage by Monday, or they will pay a penalty.
