Durham police have charged two teens and a 12-year-old girl with murder after the trio allegedly carjacked and killed a 35-year-old man on Firth Road in northern Durham on Friday night.

The 12-year-old girl accidentally shot herself in the stomach and leg while inside the victim's SUV, police said. She was treated and released from a local hospital, then placed in a Durham County juvenile facility. Police did not release her name but said she is from Raleigh.

Police say the 12-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy asked Johnny Danilo Villatoro, of Durham, for a ride shortly before 7 p.m. Friday night.

Villatoro – a father of three who is originally from Honduras – did not know the young people. He drove them to the 2900 block of Firth Street, where they carjacked and shot him, police said.

Officers found Villatoro lying in the street. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries and later died.

"He was a good man, a great daddy to my family, and I really miss him," his daughter, 10-year-old Nicole Villatoro, said.

She said her father's death has been devastating for her family. Nicole has a 7-year-old sister and a 3-month-old brother.

"He was really fun to be around," Nicole said. "Now, we can't be around him."

At about 7:30 p.m., officers found the 12-year-old suspect and the stolen SUV near an apartment building on Channing Avenue.

Officers also found the 16-year-old boy, Justino Navarette Maya, of 311 S. LaSalle St. in Durham. They arrested him Friday night and charged him with murder in the case. He was placed in the Durham County jail without bond.

The 14-year-old girl from Raleigh, whose name was not released, was arrested Saturday morning and placed in a Wake County juvenile facility.

Police released a mug shot of Maya, but not did not release pictures of the two girls.

Anyone with further information is asked to call Investigator S.M. Pate at 919-560-4440 ext. 29332 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.

I wonder what the motivation was for this?---were they put up to doing this?---the ripple affect of so many lives now ruined is staggering to think about

They all need to go to jail as adults for life!

The moral of the story? Don't give rides to strangers.

while laughing the other day with my dad over prank calls he and his friends made in the early 1950's, I'm sure adults then wondered what the world was coming to with children making such phone calls. wonder what they would think about these 3. my heart goes out to the man and his family he left behind. i'm sorry too for the families of those charged. horrible.

Release the other two kids' names and pictures. clearly their parents did not shame them much when they were younger and they need it now!
