Chicago — Angelo Grayson Smith Jr., the boyfriend of missing Charlotte teacher and Garner native Bianca Tanner, was arrested near Chicago by the U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday.
Smith was wanted for contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman Robert Tufano, who added that the charge is related to Tanner's three-year-old son.
As of Thursday afternoon, Smith was not named a suspect in Tanner’s disappearance.
Smith reported Tanner missing on June 8, saying she was intoxicated when leaving their shared Charlotte home.
A police search at their apartment turned up a belt, cellphones and evidence of blood. Tanner's son told detectives his mother's boyfriend "hurt mommy in the face," search warrants said.
Court records show Smith has a history of domestic violence, including restraining orders from two women.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said the case is being treated as a homicide. Tanner has not been found as of Thursday.
Tanner, 31, grew up in Garner and lived in Greensboro before moving to Charlotte, where she was hired to work on a special project to improve educational opportunities for eight schools.
