In honor of Veteran’s Day, Guns of Ava is a stage play based on the true story of a decorated Vietnam War veteran, Ken Dula. During one of the most turbulent times in America’s history (King’s assassination, the Hippie and the Women’s Liberation Movements) the draft pulls this soldier and plunges him into the unknown where he journeys from the foothills of North Carolina to the treacherous, war-torn jungles of Vietnam. His survival is sustained purely by his love for Ava, the only woman he’s ever desired. The love story reveals issues of a soldier seldom talked about except with his fellow comrades. It’s a vivid depiction of the fragility of mankind, the effects of PTSD, and shows resilience of the heart. Written and directed by Brenda L. Womble, an award winning and nationally recognized actress and playwright, Guns of Ava is staged in honor of veterans from all branches of the military that have ever served in the United States armed forces.
