KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A Raleigh native and Army veteran approaching her 98th birthday spoke to a crowd at the Blue Star Memorial in Knightdale on Sunday.

Anne Capucilla thanked her fellow veterans at the event and looked back at her own service with humor.

"As you can imagine, I'm glad to be here, but I'm glad to be anywhere," Capucilla said.

She was an enlisted soldier who married an officer and joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II.

A crowd favorite was her story on her time as a drill sergeant, when she had the soldiers march toward and into the ocean.

With stories and jokes Capucilla had the crowd laughing and celebrating those who have served in the United States military.
