CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — An 83-year-old woman died and two firefighters were injured late Friday after fire broke out in an Orange County home.

Family members told WRAL-TV that Emma Jean Cole was alone in her home on Smith Level Road when fire broke out at about 10:30 p.m. Fire officials said the home was engulfed when crews arrived.

Investigators have not released any information about the cause of the fire, but said the home did not have fire sprinklers. Officials said the two firefighters injured suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Cole's house was built in 1880, family members said. Cole worked at UNC Hospitals for 35 years.

"She was an integral part of our community," Janice Morgan, Cole's daughter, said. "We're already seeing an outpouring from the community."
