— The death of a Fort Bragg paratrooper who drowned in Bladen County is under investigation, the 82nd Airborne Division said Monday.

Pvt. Jordan Miles, 21, of Longview, Texas, was swimming in White Lake on Saturday when he died.

An intelligence analyst with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Miles joined the Army in October. He was assigned to the 82nd Airborne in June.

"Pvt. Miles was an exceptional paratrooper and an integral member of our team," said Lt. Col. Mark S. Childress, Miles' battalion commander. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We will never forget him."

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.

Having only been at his first duty station for less than 3 months, would like know what he did that warranted an Army Commendation Medal and a Good Conduct Medal (he hasn't been in a year which is a requirement during wartime to receive a GCM and since there isn't a declared war going on, it is 3 years).
