Fayetteville police are trying to find the person or people who beat a 74-year-old man at his home.

Police received a call early Tuesday evening asking them to check on the man  after neighbors reported that they had not seen him for a couple of days.

Officers found him on the floor of his home on Schmidt Street. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday.

It's the second such report in the area in recent days, but investigators haven't said if the two cases might be connected.

On Sunday, police received a report from an elderly woman about a burglary and sexual assault at her home on Yadkin Road – about 3 miles from Schmidt Street.

Investigators haven't provided further information about either case but ask that anyone with information to contact the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-263-1883 or 910-489-4092 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
