7 better New Year's resolutions for couples

It's that time of the year again. The time when you promise to make the upcoming year a better one than last. You may make a mental note of your resolutions or actually get around to writing them down and placing them in a spot you’ll see everyday. Either way, you should be thinking of what will make up the list. If you are looking for a couple more ideas to add on for 2017, check out these resolutions that will improve your year and your relationship:
1. Trade childhood traditions
Talk over dinner about what games or traditions you played as a child and swap. Teach her to play marbles and teach him backgammon, and there you go! Instant date nights for the next six months. As a bonus, you can also count this under the “learn something new” category on your resolution list.
2. Have quiet time together
I mean quiet time. Not Netflix time, not talking about finances time and no, the quiet time you have right before you both fall asleep doesn’t count. Schedule out a block of time each and every day to just have quiet time together. It can be 10 minutes while you both eat breakfast, or 5 minutes once the kids go to sleep when you and your spouse can sit by the window together, hold hands and just enjoy the quiet.
3. Grow a love fern
You can invest in a 5-foot tall cactus or an adorably tiny succulent, but try keeping a plant alive this year. Paint a cute little pot for it to live in and place your love fern in a spot you both can see, like the sink where you both brush your teeth. Keep a collection over the years and after a few resolutions, you’ll have a garden of love to share. Aw, how adorable.
4. Break a bad habit together
There are probably habits you’d like him to break and vice versa, but settle on a bad habit you both have and pledge for it to not exist next year. Keep track of each other’s progress and keep your spouse on track. And after a few years of this resolution, you and your spouse will be practically perfect. Win-win, right?
5. Talk to each other in person when you are home together
Stop the habit of texting your spouse when they are in the next room. Take the extra 17 seconds and walk over to the living room to remind him about your daughter’s soccer game or about your lunch date. Keep sending the cute texts when you are apart, but making a resolution to talk to each other face-to-face whenever possible (not when it’s just convenient) will mean more face-to-face time with your honey.
6. Volunteer more
Sit down and schedule out your volunteer time. Plan volunteer work into your date night, on your weekends, during family time with the kids and whenever else you have a moment to spare. Everyone is busy, everyone has other things to do and it’s never going to be convenient to stop what you are doing to give back to your community — so schedule it in the first of the year. Donate your time and your money when you can to help yourself and others have a wonderful year.
7. Keep a compliment jar for each other
Set out two large jars on the nightstand in your room and fill it up with compliments for your spouse. You can have a designated number you need to write each week, or you can just fill them out when you think of something you are especially grateful for. Let your spouse reach into their jar when they need a little pick-me-up. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a reminder of how much your darling loves you whenever you need it?
Add these resolutions to your phone's calendar and set a reminder to keep you both on track. See where you are six months from now and try to do a little better or go out for ice cream to reward yourselves for staying on track. Enjoy a happy new year together!
