HENDERSON, N.C. — Northbound lanes of Interstate 85 were closed Sunday morning for a short time while authorities investigated a single-vehicle fatal wreck.

Driver Eugene Rumph, 71, ran off the road at about 9:30 a.m. at mile marker 216 on I-85, north of Henderson, authorities said.

Passenger Jonnie Howe, 61, was killed, while passengers Margaret Rumph, 66,  and Emma Price, 76, were injured, authorities said.

Eugene Rumph, who was also injured, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and reckless driving, authorities said. He was listed in stable condition Sunday at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Price was transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, while Margaret Rumph was treated and released from Maria Parham Medical Center.

The victims, from Charlotte, were returning from a trip to Maryland.

The state Highway Patrol closed the northbound lanes and rerouted traffic around the scene while they investigated the incident and cleared the wreckage from the area.
