MAGNOLIA, N.C. — The Humane Society of the United States says it rescued more than 60 dogs from a Sampson County breeder Tuesday after local sheriff's deputies found a variety of small-breed dogs suffering from untreated medical conditions.

The owner of Royal Acres Kennels on U.S. Highway 421 in Magnolia surrendered the animals, which will be taken to an emergency shelter in Johnston County to be examined and treated.

It's unclear if or when the animals will be put up for adoption, and if so, where.

The owner has not been charged.
