Broil King has announced a safety recall of its Signet and Sovereign model grills.
A recent Consumer Reports test showed the firebox melting on the $650 Broil King Signet 90.
"We've been testing gas grills for 30 years, and this is the first time we've ever seen anything like this," Mark Connelly of Consumer Reports said.
The firebox of the grill began to melt when testers tried to cook some steaks.
"Molten metal actually dripped down under the grill. It just missed the hand of one of our testers," Connelly said.
To make sure it wasn't a fluke, Consumer Reports tested three Broil King Signet 90s. Each one had problems, resulting in a "Not Acceptable" label for the grill. Consumer Reports notified the manufacturer and government safety agencies about the findings.
Broil King said it is developing a free kit to resolve the melting problem with the Signet 90. When the kit is released, Consumer Reports will test the grill again.
Broil King is now offering a free baffle repair kit.
Broil King is one of the brand names used by Onward Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a Canadian company.
