SUV Rollover Tests Call for Tougher Roofs

RALEIGH, N.C. — New information was released Wednesday concerning the dangers of being in a sport utility vehicle that rolls over.
Every year, some 10,000 people die in rollover crashes.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently tested roofs on older, mid-size SUVs.
A key finding was that injury and death rates were lower in vehicles with stronger roofs.
Among the SUVs tested, the 2000-2004 Nissan Xterra scored the highest for having the strongest roof.
The 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee scored the weakest.
