Gumby's Pizza Will Not Reopen on Hillsborough Street

Posted February 5, 2008

— Gumby's Pizza will not reopen on Hillsborough Street.

Health inspectors shut down the restaurant after giving it a score of 60.5.

Restaurants need a minimum score of 70 to stay open. Once a restaurant is shut down, it has to be brought back up to current building codes before it can re-open.

Gumby's owner Chance Hippler appealed the action in court. A judge dismissed that appeal Monday.

Hippler told WRAL Tuesday that he stopped fighting the Health Department because he found a new location. He said it should open in the next month or so.

Dollar night at Pantana Bob's and Gumby's pizza... no wonder I felt so bad on Sundays in the mid 90's

I bet the pizza from the new location will not be anywhere near as tasty. Why do I suspect the judge ate pizza from this place?

Ever been in "the back" of an "A" rated eatery......?? Even they are nasty!!!

Milky, that was quite funny. I did laugh out loud. I ate in there with my son some years ago and it was pretty good. I can't understand how a place can not keep things clean. When I go to eat and they have anything less than 92--I just leave.

Back in the ol' college days, we used to call it "plastic cheese pizza" due to the less than desirable texture of the cheese like substance they used.

However, if you were drunk and hungry at 3AM and couldn't make it to the scary IHOP down on Hillsborough, then Gumby's was pretty darned good.

It was a dive back then. I can't imagine what it looks like now 17 years later. Wow... has it been that long???

Would the "black pellets they season with" be something like a trademark, like a "special sauce," or something? Hope it's not like a trademark thing. OMG YUCK Sorry, trying to be funny and failing miserably. After all the publicity, they'd have to change the name of the place before I'd check them out.

I remember eating many a Gumby's pizza back in '91, '92, and '93. I alway's had them delivered, and then one day I decided to go pick up my pizza to save the tip money (being a poor college student) and found out that they had a "B" rating. I remember walking into the place as a stack of pans came crashing down all over the floor. I doubt that they cleaned off the roach droppings that the pans came into contact with when they hit the floor. That place was a dive. After that time, I never ordered from them again. For a place that thrives on delivery, they don't need to worry if they get an occassional "b" or "c" rating because most people will never find out. Delivery places should be required to announce when they take an order if their score is below an "A".
