RALEIGH, N.C. — A contractor at the center of a 5 on Your Side investigation was in the Wake County Jail Wednesday.

John Shearer faces a list of charges, including one connected to a remodeling job at the Wake Forest home of Carol and George McPhaul.

The couple hired Shearer and his company, Home Remodeling Solutions, last year to make their home more accessible. Carol McPhaul is legally blind, and her husband is recovering from a stroke and is on oxygen therapy.

The disabled couple said they paid Shearer almost $125,000, but he left them with unfinished rooms, holes in the floor and live wires dangling from the ceiling.

In July, the state Attorney General's Office sued Shearer, accusing him of deceptive and unfair trade practices.

Investigators have charged Shearer with pawning items he bought with George McPhaul's credit card.
