Refund Runaround Leads Wake Woman To Five On Your Side

RALEIGH, N.C. — When a Wake County woman had trouble getting her promised refund for a propane gas tank, she called Five On Your Side for help.

Jackie Forlines used to use propane. FerrellGas picked up the tank in November. It still had plenty of gas in it. She thought she would get a refund for the gas that she didn't use and it would come within about four weeks.

When it did not arrive, Forlines called the gas company.

"We called in December. I called in January. Every time we'd just get the runaround," she said.

When Forlines called in February, she was told a manager was authorizing the refund.

"Of course, they couldn't tell me or wouldn't tell me when I'd get it or anything else, and I thought, 'well, here we go again, it's just another your check's in the mail that I'll never see,'" she said.

So Forlines called Five On Your Side.

"I decided that I'd had enough because I knew it as about $300 that they owed me, and it was just too much money just to let it go," she said.

Five On Your Side called the company's corporate office in Missouri. Company representative Scott Brockelmeyer said he is "extremely embarrassed" about the delay and blamed it on "human error" in entering the request. He sent the $285 check overnight.

Forlines is just glad she pushed for her money.

"Don't give up. If you're getting the runaround, just keep at them until you get what's rightfully yours," she said.

Brockelmeyer added that because of this situation, the company will come up with a more "foolproof" way to enter refund requests, so a similar incident does not happen again.
