Wilson reader needs produce stand/farmer's market suggestions

Posted August 10, 2011

One of our Wilson blog readers, Cathy, is looking for some suggestions about local produce stands/farmer's markets in the Wilson area. Can anyone help her find some fresh local produce?

Here is her e-mail to me:

"I've been told about the Raleigh Farmer's Market, go local,, produce co-op, etc. But, all of these seem to serve the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. I live in Wilson. Do you know of any places like this in our area that we can get fresh fruits/vegs at a cheaper price?"

Thanks for any help you can offer her!

The farmers markets (Wednesdays, 8am-1pm, 207 W. Green St., and Wilson County Fairgrounds, U.S. 301, Saturdays, 7am-noon) are both good but seasonal (May-October). Deans Farm, NC 42, is open year-round and reasonable priced.

There is a NC Roadside stand in the Rock Ridge community, open daily.

They have a farmers market at the Wilson Fairgrounds on Saturday mornings from 9-12. The vegetables are very good, I have gotten some fresh vegetables there.

There are several "farms" around Wilson depending on what you are looking for. Also, there is Wilson Produce on HWY 301 S going toward Lucama; there is a farmers market at the American Legion Fairgrounds also on HWY 301 S every Saturday from 7-12; and there is a farmer's market downtown on Green Street (near the new City of Wilson, former First Union building) every Wednseday morning.

There's a small farmer's market at the fairgrounds every Saturday morning from 7:30-12. Also the flea markets behind Ray's Drive-In on 301 and Bass Flea Market near Lucama have produce stands. The flea market stands at Ray's are very reasonably priced. Deans on Hwy. 42 is another good option that was previously mentioned.

Try Wilson Produce on 301 South about a mile out of Wilson, past Ray's Drive In. He has very good prices and good products.

Wilson has a small Farmer's Market located at 207 Green St. It is downtown behind the City of Wilson Customer Service Bldg. I received this info in an e-mail last week. I hope this helps. Customer Appreciation Day at the Farmers Market is today, August 10! Children’s activities, music, a water mister to cool off from the hot summer heat, raffle draws with lots of free give-aways, is our way of saying thank you to our loyal customers! We feature a community organization at the downtown Farmers Market each week and Sallie B. Howard School will have an informational booth tomorrow.

Thanks Sarah! I didn't realize that you had Wilson listed in your produce database. Wonderful!

Thanks for the tips, alwaysab and robertwillis!

    i would suggest:

They are a CSA out of Benson, but you get to pick what you want in your box. They deliver to a set location (JP Farris in wilson). I use them and the produce has been good. We did have 1 problem, but they refunded the amount. Everything else has been good - they have a good variety of produce, dairy products, etc.
