Another reminder about theft of newspapers from paper boxes

Posted July 21, 2011

Here's a photo sent in by one of our readers of a new sign on a newspaper box she saw. It's a good reminder of how serious it is to steal extra papers (or coupon inserts) from the newspaper boxes. It's just so sad that this sign had to be placed on the box to begin with. Thanks to Oxy for sending in the photo!

Just sell me the coupons for half price and keep the paper. The N&O is the only thing further left than WRAL

I remember driving with my Dad to a little roadside fruit stand on the SC/NC border south of Charlotte. No one was in sight. He put a couple bags of peaches in the car, lifted a brick off of an old battered cash box, placed the payment with a note of thanks inside the box and replaced the brick. It felt good being trusted like that.

    Times have certainly changed.

Someone always steals the coupon inserts out of the Sunday N&O where I work.(from the paper boxes outside)Have been doing it for a couple of months now. Now I have to make a trip to the kangaroo up the street from where I work in order to get a paper. It's not far, just takes more time rather than being able to grab one on my way in to work. It's a shame that people are doing this and ruining it for others. :(

You ever seen a person put a bag of grapes in their shopping cart at the store and eat them while they shop? By check out time they have consumed half of them. Dont people understand that is the same thing as stealing or shoplifting?

You would think they could invent a machine so only one paper comes out when you put your money in - sort of like a candy bar or soda machine.

I'm with you on not wanting to pay sales tax on a paper!

It really is a shame that people steal like that but I do believe what goes around comes around so it will come back to them in a not so pleasant way! I hope they don't do away with the newspaper machines. I don't like buying them inside the stores because most of them now charge tax on the papers. Yes, I'm that cheap, er thrifty! ;D

I'm in Roxboro and we don't have a local paper that carries the Sunday inserts, and I cannot get the Redplum in the mail either. There is a N&O box at our Lowes Foods which is about 13 miles from my home, and I have driven twice before only to find NO papers in the box. The carrier said that so many people have been stealing them that she's not sure if she will continue to bring any. I didn't bother with a paper last week so I don't know if she brought any, but I'm hoping she brings some this coming Sunday. I wish they were all sold INSIDE of a store. They should do away with the boxes (or get vending type machines LOL).
