Help a reader swim on a budget

Posted June 9, 2011

I received an e-mail from a reader looking for some frugal swimming options for her family this summer in the Rolesville/Wake Forest area. Any suggestions to help Brittney?

Here is her request:

"We don't live in a neighborhood that has a swimming pool and our town pool has such limited hours we can't go as a family. We did try the above ground blow-up pool but the chemicals and time made it more of a burden than it was worth. Any ideas for swimming fun in the Wake Forest/Rolesville area? Also if there are any neighborhoods that have open membership discounts I'd love to know about them! - Brittney"

Anyone have any suggestions for swimming inexpensively in the 40/42 area? I have 2 young children and they would love to go to a pool! Faye, you're around this area, right? Any ideas?

I would definitely recommend Holding Park pool. Don't know how old your kids are and when you can swim, but if they are 4 and under there's a parent/toddler swim time where you can swim the whole summer (one parent, two kids) for $30 I believe. (And thanks Bklyn2Raleigh for posting the link to the pool database :)

We live just out of Rolesville...My kids enjoy Holding Park pool in Wake Forest close to the Seminary. Its pretty inexpensive ($1 for kids 2 and under, $3 for kids 3-12, and $4 for 13 and up)and there are always lifeguards and even a snack stand. Also, we went to Falls lake about 2 weeks ago. It was only a 15-20 minute drive and the kids enjoyed it. There are lots of lifejackets for the kids there too. Hope this helps.

There is a swimming pool in downtown Wake Forest that Ive heard was pretty decent, not sure pricing or hours. There is also Granate Falls in Rolesville. Not sure about membership and all, but those are worth a shot!! Good luck...As someone also posted Falls lake is a pretty good option also!

I have always had great experiences with the Parks & Rec pools. I am in Raleigh, so I have more options, but I think there is one in Wake Forest. Here is a link to the Go Ask Mom pool database:

I live down in Holly Springs, so I'm not familiar with your area, but until you find a place to swim...we picked up a cool sprinkler for $10 at Dollar General while we were waiting for our pool to open. It has one main hose and several little "valves" that spray all crazy in all directions. Maybe a fun water toy until you find a membership?
