Your favorite roadside produce stands

Posted April 29, 2011

With local produce now in season, there are some great buys at local roadside produce stands run by area farmers. Where are your favorite produce stands?

I received an e-mail from Smart Shopper reader, Carla, who sent the following request to all of us:

"In a recent post you mentioned tomatoes at various local farm stands. Do you think you could do a post on your blog asking people what their favorite farm stands are? I don't know where *any* are, thus my request! Plus, I think it might be a good topic for this time of year with lots of folks wanting to buy fresh produce. It would be great if you could also mention any stands that you know of. "

FYI, Carla lives in the area near South Zebulon and far east Clayton off 42 East so if you know of any specific stands in that area, she would really appreciate it.

Carla, the produce stand I frequent most is located in the 40/42 area in Johnston County right across from Cleveland Elementary School. They currently have Florida tomatoes that taste wonderful for only $1.50/lb!

I also like the produce stand in downtown Clayton on Main Street. Can't remember the name but they also have very good tomatoes for $1.50/lb last time I was there.

What other local produce stands do you all recommend?

Pope's Strawberry Farm in Knightdale is great. It's at 1305 Fayetteville St. If you pick your own it's only $1.45lb. They are great strawberries.

Thanks for all the info about your favorite produce stands! And thanks also to Oxy for the tip about Italian sausage. I'm a relocated NYer myself, and really miss some of the Italian favorites. I'm looking forward to visiting the farmstands!

We like Porter Farms on Hwy 42 at Mt Pleasant Rd (about 1.5 miles east of Old Stage Rd) in Willow Spring. They have pick your own and already picked strawberries right now and other produce. They have several flavors ice cream too.

Lee's Produce Stand is the one on Main St. in Clayton. It's at the corner of Robertson and Main. It's a permanent location and they are open year round with a good selection of fresh fruits and veggies. They also have some home canned items and some refrigerated items like eggs, bacon, and sausage. My daughter likes to get a snowcone or icecream when we stop there. The people who own/run the place are very nice as well.

I love Country Boy Produce on Six Forks Rd-it is about 2.5 miles north of 540. Jamie who is in charge of the stand is really nice, and I love their produce.

Thanks for the names of the stands I mentioned, superturf and sonnygrl. I just could not think of them. But both had great tomatoes in the last 2 weeks!
