Cold Stone Creamery in Southpoint to close temporarily

Posted April 26, 2011

I received an e-mail from the marketing dept. with Cold Stone Creamery. It seems that they will be relocating the Southpoint location as of early May but will have to close for a short period while they find a new location. Here are the details from the e-mail and a request from Cold Stone:

"Our Durham-Renaissance Center at Southpoint location will be closing it’s doors. Our landlord has used a clause in an agreement we have with them, to terminate our lease. We want to be clear, we are not in any financial distress, and we are current with all of our taxes, rents, etc. We are currently exploring our options to find another Durham location. Please help us communicate to our customers that we are not abandoning them and we hope to find a viable option for a new Durham location soon. Our last day of operation at our current location will either be May 1st or May 8th, we will let you know as soon as we have confirmation of the date. If there are any SouthPoint area shopping centers that would like to have a Cold Stone Creamery, they should feel free to contact us. In the meantime, all gift cards, coupons, cakes, ice cream treats, etc can be handled through our Cary, Apex, or Raleigh Brier Creek locations, whichever is closest to them. "

It won't reopen. They have good ice cream but there was a documentary on CNBC that said Cold Stone is closing a ton of stores because the franchise takes kickbacks and the owners can't make a dime. They'll be entirely out of business in a few years.

Sad & odd. You would think that a retailer would hold on to good renters & try to keep them at their location. I've never shopped at Southpoint. Been there once, but everything seemed to be wayyy over priced & I assumed it was due to stores trying to cover very high rent, but I never went back. If this is the way that Southpoint does business, then they wont be around very long.

This, on top of Marble Slab closing at Southpoint Mall. This is getting serious! Where can I go in Southwest Durham for real ice cream that costs less than a small fortune (ie, Haagen-Dazs?)

That's interesting. I live very near there so I shop in that complex a lot. I wonder what is going on with the landlords? I would think coldstone would be popular there. Gosh I hope they don't go after chilis next. We eat there quite a bit.

I just hope Cold Stone can find another prime location soon.

Sounds like this shopping center gets a bunch of smaller stores in to get their center up and running, and then when things are established, they dump them. Pretty shoddy way to do business.

Sounds like a trend in that shopping center. Thanks for sharing, Erika.

Thank you, Faye. When the Family Christian Store in the same shopping center was closing they told me their lease was also terminated, which is a shame! There are no other Christian bookstores in this area (SW Durham/Chapel Hill).
