Thursday Thoughts: 25 lbs for the 25th reunion!

Today’s Thursday Thoughts is a challenge of sorts. It’s a challenge to myself and to anyone else in my situation. In the last year and a half, I have had some serious stress starting with the death of my mom. Couple that with some other personal hurdles and my stress-o-meter has been way off the charts. The good news is that I coped fairly well, handling most of my required responsibilities as a full-time mom and wife, with a full-time job, despite some real inner turmoil. The bad news is that I soothed my aching heart with food. A lot of food. Too much food and not enough exercise. In the last year and a half I have gained enough that my chubby clothes are tight, which is no fun at all. Back to good news though. I’m immerging from my funk quite refreshed, in a new home, with a newfound sense of peace. The experts say to give yourself a year when you experience great loss and for me, well it just took a little more time.

The exciting news is that my 25th high school reunion is this summer. I’ll wait while you do the math….. As I was saying, we will be traveling to my reunion in Colorado and I want to fit into to some skinny jeans…scratch that….some comfortable and cute jeans appropriate for moms, preferably in the size 8's I have in my closet  (ie – NOT my fat pants).

The challenge is to eat healthy AND frugal meals AND get in some regular exercise in the next 5 months and beyond. So, you will begin to see some changes in the meal plan I post on Mondays. Although we eat pretty healthy meals already, I’ll be making them even healthier and of course, eating a more reasonable portion.

If you are thinking of heading in the same direction, I would love for you to join me in this healthy and frugal adventure full of fresh produce, high quality protein, whole grains and plenty of exercise. I’ll post a weekly update letting you know how much I have lost each week and where I found good deals on produce and other healthy stuff.

My goal is to lose 25 lbs by this summer. I lost 5 in February (partly thanks to a stomach bug, but I’ll take it where I can get it!). At a reasonable loss of 5 lbs per month, I will reach my goal by reunion time and be ready to hike those mountains and enjoy showing the Rockies to my kids and husband.

    ambear - I am so sorry your little one is sick. I will keep him in my prayers regarding his upcoming surgery. As far as snacks to bring along to the hospital I would recommend: granola bars, baby carrots, apples, rice cakes or popcorn. All travel well in a small snack bag and will keep you from hitting the very expensive cafeteria.

    Glad to see more of you join the fun!

    I second sgw's recommendation about a garden. We will be planting our as usual this year. Not sure we can work in a spring garden with the move, but will definitely be planting the summer garden. There really is nothing like a tomato and cucumber sandwich picked fresh from your own garden!

    I'm with you Faye! I joined WW a week and a half ago. I was dieting before that and I've lost 4.5 pounds last week and 2 pounds before that. I need to lose more than 25 but I'm with you!!

    For those looking for frugal produce, remember that now's the time to start planting spring vegetables in your garden. You can get quick crops of lettuce, radishes and carrots and before you know it, it will be time to put in your summer vegies. Doesn't get any cheaper or better tasting than picking it yourself.

    If you don't have space/sun for your own garden, there are a lot of community gardens around that you might consider joining (see It's not only a great way to build some new friendships but is also really good exercise (and good therapy)!

    I am an emotional eater & I let life's trauma's overwhelm me; my only joy was eating. What a comfort food became UNTIL last June when I had ENOUGH. Couldn't walk up a hill without losing my breath. I used the money I was saving couponing to join WW. I have now last 36 pounds and have about 10 more to go. My point in all of this is today you became accountable by telling your coupon "groupies" your plans. Accountability will be your success! Plus we'll all be cheering each other on! Go Faye Go!

    I'm in. I haven't weighed in quite a while so that should be interesting. And so glad we are only posting lost weight. I received a loise weight journal for Christmas, I will begin using that.

    Great book I read long ago, need to find it again said to eat only fruits in the a.m., veggies for lunch and add proteins for dinner. That worked great for taking off weight and easy.

    One could do smoothie, or fruit salad for breakfast and salad or soup for lunch. Or both if you are really hungry!

    I'm in, too! I lost about 25 lbs. 18 months ago, and the good news is I kept MOST of it off, but I'm up about 4 pounds from my low. So I want to get the final 20 pounds off, once and for all. I feel like my body has now adapted to its new, lower weight (-21 lbs. now), so I feel like it's time to shake it up again and get serious and JUST DO IT before summer!

    Yay for group support (without WW prices!) that's frugal!

    i feel your pain. i started weight watchers just this past monday. but lost 5.4lbs the first week. just remember you can have just about anything you want to eat; even the "junk" food if you watch the portions!! Good luck!!!
