CF bulbs seem to last longer in places where they aren't constantly turned on and off. My husband worked for NC state in the maintenance dept, and he said he saw the same thing there. If the bulb is in a place where it stays on a lot it lasts a lot longer. They also don't do well in places that are cold for some reason. Personally, I can't wait for LED's to become affordable.

We've had pretty good luck with the CF bulbs - and there are some that stay on 24/7 and never seem to burn out! There are so many different companies making them now - don't know what brand we have bought, I think we picked them up at Costco?

I really wish the newer, more expensive, compact fluorescent bulbs actually lasted a little longer than the much less expensive bulbs, though. We have been making that change slowly as well and the fluorescent bulbs are not all they are cracked up to be.

I'm wondering if stores are not going to start reducing incandescent light bulbs because of the new law requiring the end of those being sold. It phases in between 2012 to 2014 and some manufacturers (not GE) have already begun shutting down.

So if you really like them, buy them now :) I know in our house we've slowly been replacing bulbs as they burn out with the newer more efficient bulbs.
