Of course this would happen when my fridge and freezer are full!

Posted September 24, 2010

The ice and water dispenser on the freezer door decided to stop working 3 days ago but we figured it was just something to do with the dispenser, not an overall problem with the fridge/freezer. Guess again. I woke up to a thawing freezer and a not really cold fridge this morning. Yikes! Lesson learned - as soon as the fridge or freezer starts to show any unhappiness, call the repair person! I did call Garner TV and Appliance, (where we purchased the fridge 4 years ago) on Wednesday and verified that the fridge was still under warranty. I had intended to call the repair people yesterday but got caught up in other stuff and forgot. Well, guess who I called first thing today? Unfortunately, they can't come out until Monday. Note to self - call repair person sooner next time.

I am, however, thankful for a few things.

1. We have a deep freeze and I was able to move most of the items in the thawing freezer in to the chest freezer (although it was already almost full from super doubles!). None of the meat had begun to thaw so I didn't loose any of the $1.79/lb chicken breasts or $1.99/lb London broil!

2. My dad lives in the neighborhood and had some extra room in his fridge for a lot of our fridge stuff.

3. I have enough free or almost free condiments in my pantry to replace those in the fridge with no problem.

4. The fridge is still under warranty so at least it is covered.

5. It will be really easy to give the fridge and freezer a good cleaning now that it is empty!

6. We still have air conditioning, so it's not as bad as it could be!

I share this drama with you as a reminder to NOT do what I did. Don't wait to call the repair people until the ice is melting....

We were soooo very lucky we caught the outage before everything was too far gone. Now, we'll see if my dad ate everything while it was hanging out in his fridge. lol - not likely - he isn't one to crave Danimals yogurt. :-)

So happy for you that you were able to save all your food. :)

I feel for you; it's happened to me before, so now it's always a threat in the back of my mind. Yes, I know that sounds paranoid. LOL

Where, oh, where are the fridge people today? How could you leave me here all alone????..... Hoping they arrive soon. :-)

HG - You are fab, as always! Luckily, my dad had enough room in his fridge to store most dairy. You and your beer fridge.... too funny!

  • Harleygirlie Sep 26, 2010

Faye if you need to store anything, I've got a fridge in the garage that ONLY has beer in it. : )
Oh and if you need ice, just call me.

    This is a costly story...
About a month ago, I was sitting on the couch thinking.. "I should get a new refrigerator with a water dispenser and Ice maker. After all, we only drink water and have to buy ice." Yes, buy ice b/c we can't seem to make enough ice on the trays.
Later on that day one of my children had filled a container of water and put ice on it. However, did not tighten the lid. You can image what happen next. I was putting some of my "Dairy" products in the refrigerator and moved the container. Well, the container came crashing down on my (right) foot. Did not bother me for a while, but then asked my brother (who was visiting) to take me to the ER. BROKEN FOOT!!! So, in my case.. this was a very expensive "refrigerator" venture. Now, I have to pay the MD bills and will eventually get a new refrigerator. LOL...

adcok - I am so sorry you lost the groceries. Did you have to replace the appliance or were you able to get it repaired?

J - Glad you had a good experience at Garner TV and Appliance. Thanks for the Boca q's!

April - My attitude is still holding up - as long as we keep the ice coming, the cooler life isn't so bad. Don't think I want to go all week like this so I really hope they can fix it on Monday. We shall see.

garner tv & appliance is the front-runner by far. haven't actually purchased it, but will next week. i like buying local, but it's a no-brainer b/c of the price anyway. thanks for the recommendation!! (maybe you'll get commission!)

That is exactly what happened to us 3 weeks ago, but alas..we didn't have a freezer to move all our stuff to and we lost most of it. The good side..we hadn't paid full price for any of it.
