Thursday thoughts: Angel Food Ministries

Last week at the WRAL-FM Taste of Home Show, I was approached by Dona, who wanted to know if I had ever heard of Angel Food Ministries. She is the director for the Angel Food program at 3 Triangle churches. I explained that I was aware of the program and that I had heard good things from many who had purchased the food boxes. Her inquiry reminded me that I have not discussed Angel Food since I started blogging for WRAL in November. In this tough economy, it’s a good idea to know about all your options for frugal food. Angel Food Ministries offers some good deals, especially for those people who don’t have the time, energy or ability to coupon or go to different stores to get the best deals.

The boxes range in price from $21 - $41 and include a variety of food. The $31 box is designed to feed a family of 4 for about a week. In looking at the items and quantity included in the box, I think they give you enough for 7 dinners, a few lunches and a couple breakfast meals. This box would not be enough food for all our meals (especially lunches that the kids could take to school), but it would provide about 75% - 80% of the food and drinks we eat in a normal week. The box does not include drinks, other than a 32 oz carton of 2% shelf stable milk. There are a number of specialty boxes you can order as well. Some of the specialty boxes include a Steak Combo, Seafood Variety Box or a Fresh Fruit and Veggie Box.

There is no limit to the number of boxes you can order and there is no income qualification you have to meet to participate in the program. Folks at any income level can order the boxes and it is open to everyone. They accept cash, credit card, debit card, food stamps and money orders.
