Grocery deals 9-1

Posted September 1, 2010

It's almost Labor Day and that means there are lots of deals on grilling and picnic items including chicken, hot dogs, condiments, buns, soda and more!

The big battle seems to be for the lowest price on chicken breasts, this week. Here are the contenders:

Food Lion enters the ring with Holly Farms chicken breasts on sale for $1.97/lb

Food Lion also sends in some Holly Farms chicken breast tenders for $2.17/lb

Just to be sure we got the message, Food Lion is also entering the frozen chicken breast in a 2.5 lb bag on sale BOGO

But wait – is that Walmart throwing the knock out punch? Yes, yes it is. This week’s chicken breast win goes to Walmart at $1.78 per pound!

If you are really looking for even more frugal chicken, Kroger has some good deals as well:

I saw happy's post about the school supply markdown at the Garner Target (Timber and 70). I was also there Thursday afternoon and they still have lots of stuff. The other Garner Target at White Oak had most things marked down 30% and it looked like they were working on marking down to 50%. There are some nice BIG fabric covered notebooks at both stores for 50% off (about $10 now) if anyone needs to upgrade their couponing binder!

  • Faye Prosser - Smart Shopper Sep 3, 2010

    Great job cchapman!

FYI - check your Harris Teeter e-vic e-mail today. On mine I got Bestlife butter for .99 and there are $1 coupons from the paper a few weeks ago. Also got BOGO Kraft cheese, limit 1 free. This will work well with the $5 Kraft coupon I posted abotu a couple days ago.

  • cchapman Sep 2, 2010

I bought 5 Cokes and got $4.00 off the pork ribs (expected). I also got a catalina for $4.00 off future purchase on Saturday or Sunday (not expected). I also got a $.50 off 2 FL shredded cheese that coincided with the BOGO for their cheese. It made two of my bags $.75 each.

  • Faye Prosser - Smart Shopper Sep 2, 2010

Thanks April. Sometimes I get a little cross-eyed looking at all these flyers. It helps to add a little humor.

Elizjax - thanks again for the info on the Gain - I was able to get 2 of the small bottles free.

Okay, your chicken play by play cracks me up.

  • Faye Prosser - Smart Shopper Sep 1, 2010

Not sure how I missed including the Palermos coupon, but I did. Sorry abotu that. Here is the link and I added the clickable link to the coupon box at the top of the page.
    http://www.palermospizza.com/pdf/Palermo%27s%20ECoupon%20EX%20123110%20Save%20$1.pdf

Thanks for the clarification, elizjax - I will be looking for the smaller bottle.

wildfrenchrose - I'll make sure I seal the foil super tight!

  • elizjax2000 Sep 1, 2010

Faye- I believe the larger bottle is $1.69 but I just happened to see the smaller ones for 99 cents and picked it right up. This was at the Cameron Village store.

  • wildfrenchrose Sep 1, 2010

You make sure all edges are well sealed. I was very careful, since my foil isn't heavy duty and I was afraid the bones would pierce it--but it was fine! If you take it off the bone after cooking (who eats an entire breast?) and put all the pieces on a plate, then you can shred and freeze any leftovers for chicken pot pie another day!

  • jdwsbutterfly5604 Sep 1, 2010

Where is the link to the $1 printable for the Palermos pizza?

  • Faye Prosser - Smart Shopper Sep 1, 2010

Thanks elizjax! It does not show up on the Express Lane yet (probably since it's such a new product)and the ad indicates that it is $1.69, so I didn't include it on the list. Have you already seen it on sale today? Must be unadvertised - love free dish shoap!

    Thanks happymomma!

Sounds good wildfrechroase! How do you keep the juices from running out of the foil packet when you turn it over to cook 20 minutes more?
