Chatting with Bill and Lynda on Monday morning and I need your help!

Posted June 11, 2010

I need your help! On Monday morning about 8:00 am I'll be chatting with Bill and Lynda on 101.5 WRAL-FM radio. The topic is yard sale do's and don'ts. I plan on sharing some funny yard sale stories including the weirdest things people have seen at yard sales and funny experiences people have had at yard sales.

Here's where you come in - If you have any stories to share - post them here or send them to me via e-mail at If I read your story on the air, I will send you an envelope of coupons! I only use first names as well.

Thanks for your help and I hope you can tune in Monday morning.

The thing I dislike most about yard sales is when potential buyers want to haggle over prices. I always mark the item as low as I'm willing to accept, so don't insult me by trying to get it for free. I hate greedy people.

mrelmillard, yours tops what I have read so far..however I placed a sign in my yard that read "Yard Sale" and got a phone call asking why did I want to sell my yard..that was so many years ago..when yard sales first became popular..

We've actually had people come by our house the day BEFORE the yard sale to see what we had to offer- got rid of several pieces of furniture early, at least!

After the death of both my parents we were having a yard sale on a very cold January day. Because of the weather we left everything inside the house and allowed shoppers to come in. My husband went into our bedroom and found a person digging through his suitcase choosing pieces of his "unmentionables" to purchase.

The weirdest thing I have ever seen at a yard sale is a stuffed rattlesnake(as in a rattler that had been preserved by a taxidermist). We actually bought it, and gave it as a gag gift at a family reunion, and then received it back one year as a Christmas gift Then we sent it as a gift one year. It has now disappeared (actually it was probably sold at another yard sale.) :o) The family member we had sent it to as a gift pretended that he had showed it to his 80+ year old father and scared him into a heart attack. We actually called to check on the elderly cousin, feeling awful thinking we had caused this, only to find out the joke was on us. :o)

Make sure it really is a yard sale! My girl friend and I were excited about getting our first apartment. We had a very small budget so we thought we would decorate with yard sale items. We pulled up to our first house a small group were sitting around a few tables filled with everything you would need for a house. We thought we hit the jackpot! Come to find out we had actually had busted in on a bridal shower! When the hosted asked us if she could help us. We put down our Tupperware and wash clothes and ran to the car. We heard their laughing even with the windows rolled up. We were embarrassed but laughing too!
