WRAL's Smart Shopper Faye Prosser spoke Friday with Lynette Stone, store manager of Common Cents Grocers.

The discount grocery store at 6904 Glenwood Ave. offers brand-name groceries and health and beauty items at 50 to 80 percent off retail price.

The store's set-up is great for people who want to save on their groceries but don't want to take the time to clip coupons or shop the supermarket sales.

Stone said the idea for the store emerged when she and friends were talking about how they could help the community in these tough economic times. The store opened Feb. 1.

They buy brand-name products that grocery stores have pulled from their shelves for a variety of reasons, such as damaged packaging or a changed design on the packaging.
