New store offers 'Common Cents' grocery shopping

Posted May 15, 2010

WRAL's Smart Shopper Faye Prosser spoke Friday with Lynette Stone, store manager of Common Cents Grocers.

Common Cents Grocers Store brings 'Common Cents' to grocery shopping

The discount grocery store at 6904 Glenwood Ave. offers brand-name groceries and health and beauty items at 50 to 80 percent off retail price.

The store's set-up is great for people who want to save on their groceries but don't want to take the time to clip coupons or shop the supermarket sales.

Stone said the idea for the store emerged when she and friends were talking about how they could help the community in these tough economic times. The store opened Feb. 1.

They buy brand-name products that grocery stores have pulled from their shelves for a variety of reasons, such as damaged packaging or a changed design on the packaging.

Happy - this store was very clean. No worries about that.

I'm definitely going this weekend to check it out. There is a discount grocery in the mountains called Go Grocery but it's not very clean.

    Thanks for the tip!

Sounds like my kind of place. Will have to check it out.

It's in a building behind the Wachovia bank, which is behind the McDonalds at the intersection heremeaj posted below.

You can't see it from the street and they have no signs out yet. It is behind the McDonalds that is at the corner of Glenwood and Millbrook intersection. There is a driveway just after the McDonalds and also one just before the McDonalds on Millbrook road. The McDonalds is right accross Glenwood from Walgreen that is on the corner of Duraleigh and Glenwood. It is on the side of the building that houes Evergreen church and it looks like a tiny strip mall when you get back there. The store has only a small sign in their window so you really have to look for it.

What is this located near? I can't seem to place it on Glenwood Avenue. Thanks!

This place is great! New items arrive all the time. Everything is name brand and in good condition. The store is immaculate, the shelves are neat and clean and the staff is outstanding. This is the Harris Teeter of discount grocers.

I have been in this store and it is wonderful. Normally expensive items like razors, Splenda, and coffee are so reasonable. It costs less to shop here than to use a coupon with a sale item many other places. They have name brands that are great and are a super resource for dog food and cereal. They even have some great gourmet items- marinades, condiments and lots of high end beauty products at really low price points. No doubt we will be going back, saved a ton on my first trip in. This kind of store really allows you to get more for the dollar. The staff made us feel so welcome and not at all like we were in a discount place. What a blessing this will be to the community as the dollar buys less every day.
