Weekly grocery deals 2-10!

Posted February 10, 2010

There are lots of great deals this week on boneless skinless chicken breast, asparagus ($1.49 at Lowe's Foods),  free mission tortillas (at Harris Teeter), free Oikos Greek yogurt (HT and Lowe's Foods), Steamfresh veggies, .58 Mini Wheats (at Lowe's Foods) and so much more!  There is also another promotion at Kroger - buy 10 qualifying items, get $3 off total instantly.  The new Harris Teeter at North Hills opened today with lots of fabulous specials as well including milk at $1.99 for a gallon!

This week, I have offered more commentary on the various deals (which ones are better than others, when an item is at a good buy price, etc). Do you find it helpful or distracting? I'm trying to decide if you want me to continue the commentary in the future or if it doesn't add extra value for you. Thanks for your opinion!

Harris Teeter
February 10 – February 16, 2010

E-Vic Specials this week (remember that you can only get these prices if you are signed up with the online e-Vic program at

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast, frozen, 3 lb bag $4.99 ($1.66/lb – a very good price for boneless skinless!), Limit 2

Tide Detergent, 50 ounce $4.99 - .35/1 coupon from 2/7 = $4.29 (a very good price for Tide – but not for other less expensive brands), Limit 1

Sargento Cheese, 8 oz, $1.49, limit 1 (there is a .40/2 coupon from 1/31 but I wouldn’t use it on this deal because you have to buy 2 to use the coupon and there is a limit of 1 bag of cheese at $1.49. The other bag will be $2.49 making each one $1.99 after coupon – not a very good deal at all. You are better off to just get the one bag at $1.49 and not use the coupon at all.)

OH, sorry - HT is cheaper when I buy items on sale AND double coupons...

  • coffeecrazy Feb 13, 2010

Nancy, the HT in my town will not double manufacture's coupons that say "Do Not Double" either. The cashier SLOWLY went through my 30+ coupons and pulled out the do not double and had the manager come ring them by hand so they wouldn't double... But HT is cheaper than FL, and FL won't double coupons at all- and that is about all Wilson offers because there just isn't enough patience in my being to shop at WalMt... :)

  • unc85vw Feb 12, 2010

Faye - I LOVE your commentary!! LOVE it.

  • Faye Prosser - Smart Shopper Feb 12, 2010

Hi Erika - I don't usually include Target because they don't usually have the cheapest prices compared to the same item when there is a good sale and doubled coupon at other grocery stores. There are certainly some good deals at Target each week, but not as many as there are at the grocery stores. The Target Club cr*ckers (why won't it let me use the word cr*ckers?!),even at $1.94 are still too expensive for me! :-) The $1.77 is a good price if you buy the Lean Cuisine normally, but not a very frugal price per serving for food in general. But it is cheaper than going out to lunch!

tot - I agree with you - I would not have used the Bertolli coupon either with that deal.

Nancy - Yikes! I would hate to see the stores not double those coupons that automatically double when scanned. It's unfortunate that some manufacturer's put Do Not Double on some coupons. Maybe it's worth your while to call Mission and ask them to stop putting do not double. I think I will.

Hi CeCe! It was so nice to meet you last night. Thank you for coming to the class. Your coupon swap sounds like lots of fun and it's just in time for the rumored Harris Teeter Super Doubles starting next Wednesday (thanks to Chet at for that tip!).

Sad news to report. Anyone that shops Harris Teeter in Holly Springs on the 55 bypass (SouthPark shopping center, new) - the manager was ringing up my order today and I had the 75 cent off coupon for the Mission tortillas, which were on sale for $1.50. He stopped when he got to that coupon and said "Are you aware we don't double this?" I asked why not? He said and pointed "It says do not double" and I replied, "Every other Harris Teeter doubles those when it's stated." He replied, "they are not supposed to, they could get in trouble"

Ugh. I won't be shopping at that HT anymore.

  • t0tAlChA0s Feb 11, 2010

Faye- the coupon I had was $1 off Bertolli frozen meals. Last time I checked the price at Lowes I think it was $6.99/1. I didn't think that was a good deal at all. Most of the coupons I see for frozen meals are $1/2. We use to never eat frozen meals until I started couponing. If it were up to my fam now, they would eat the chicken Viola every night. But I tell them I'm not paying full price and I don't have a coupon. There response...gggrrrrr!! lol Also had a coupon for $1.50 off Lysol Neutra Air. I don't always have a chance every week to hit all the stores. So it may be on sale one week at one store but I don't have a chance to use the coupon.

  • Erika in CH Feb 11, 2010

Faye, I agree, please include commmentary!

Also, you didn't mention $1.77 Lean Cuisine at HT! I thought this was a great deal, coupon or not!

I'm wondering why you don't mention Target? I shop mainly there and HT, and Target prices are consistenly lower. Example: Club Multigrain cr*ckers (they wouldn't let me use this word!), HT:3.65, Target: 1.94! Thanks for all your hard work!

  • kol78 Feb 11, 2010

I went to Lowes to get the Pillsbury biscuits/sweet rolls deal. There was a smart source box there that had a coupone for $.75/2. Ended up getting 2 coupons and 4 containers of biscuits. Earned my $1 reward and ended up paying $3.76, $.94 per can. I just started couponing and was excited about this deal.
