The new Save-A-Lot store in Durham is opening on Thursday, September 27. The store opens at 8:00 AM with a ribbon-cutting at 2:00 pm. At this time, there are no in-store specials planned for the event, but the Communications Manager did mention that there may be some store samples.

Homes that are within a 2 to 3 mile radius of the new store should receive a coupon for $5 off a $25 purchase. You can also print off a similar coupon from their Facebook page. You can find the link to the coupon on their website HERE.

If you join their Smart Shopper Club, you will receive an e-mail with the sales as well as additional promotions.

Coupon policy: Save-A-Lot does accept coupons for the national brands that they carry. They do not double coupons. Keep in mind that 80% of their products are private label brands and there are no manufacturer coupons available for those products.

History: In business since 1977, there are now over 1300 store nationwide. The closest store (other than the one in Durham) is in Dunn. According to Chon Tomlin, External Communications Manager, Save-A-Lot tries to offer all the basics for families with not a lot of extras. They have a smaller footprint including bringing in fresh baked goods instead of baking them in-store.

Location: The store address is: 812 Liberty Street,  Durham, NC 27701

Job Openings: According to their website, they are still hiring store clerks, a perishable clerk and a meat cutter. Click HERE for more details.

For those that don't want to go to facebook for a coupon, they also have the $5 coupon on their website.

I have shopped at some up North. Expect to pay 10 cents each for a bag or bring your own.

I used to shop at Save A Lot stores when I lived in Las Vegas and it really helps people who are on a tight budget for groceries. There are some name brands but most of them are off the wall brands, which sometimesa are better then the name brands. The produce section is small and the meat selection in pretty good. I have been to the one in Burlington ( which is closer to my home in Mebane) and you no longer have to pay for your cart. To get the most for your money, compare ads from FL, LF, WF and HT with Save a Lot and see which store saves you the most money. I look forward to the store opening.

There is also a store in Henderson NC. I also was not impressed with the store. I don't think the Henderson one required a quarter for a cart. I'll have to go back and see about their meat deal. Sounds like a good bargain.

FYI - ribbon cutting time has been changed to 2 pm, if you were planning on going for that part. Store is still opening at 8 am on Thursday.

I went to the one in Burlington once, and I wasn't very impressed. If I remember correctly you have to pay a quarter for your cart, just like you do at Aldi. There wasn't a good selection of produce like Aldi has though, and the off-brand meat didn't look too appealing to me. It also took forever to check out. I could have just been there on an off day though as they were newly opened and still getting settled in. As for the meat deal, the new Just Save Stores (that are replacing many Lowe's Foods) have the same deal, and I love it too. You get 5 packages of meat for $19.99, and there is so much to choose from - ground beef, hamburger patties, pork chops, beef stew, sausage , chcken nuggets, corn dogs, hotdogs (huge pack - like 24), and much more. It is great if you really need meat and there are not good sales at the other stores.

Juanita - I looked at the ad for this week and they really seem to have similar prices as Food Lion and Aldi store brand prices. There were some decent produce and meat prices. I wonder what the cost per pound and specific meat cuts are including for the 5 packs of meat. Please follow up with us once you shop the new Durham store and let us know what you think.

Obviously I am a huge fan of save a lot. Being from ny that was one of the stores my mom always did our grocery shopping. My favorite deal that they offer (at least in ny) is 5 packs of meat for $20.00!!! They usually have like a mix and match kind of thing like my mom would get 2 2lb packs of ground beef and some pork chops and chicken all for $20. If this save a lot has that same special it would help my family tremendously bc i cook everyday and shopping for meats at HT and LF takes alot out of my $45 budget every week!! Cant wait!!!! :)
