Giveaway: 5 prize packages!

Published: 2012-08-17 11:13:00
Updated: 2012-08-17 11:14:35

We have a great giveaway today which includes free Plackers Flossers and Van's free product coupons! Five lucky readers will each win one of these prize packages! Read on for the details on how to enter and some tips for making back to school easier on the kids (and you!).

The prize package will include a pack of Plackers Kids flossers,  a coupon for any one Van’s 6- or 8-count Waffle, Waffle Sticks, Pancake or French Toast Sticks AND a coupon for any one Van’s 6-count English Muffins, plus a $1 off and a $2 off the same products respectively!

Here are some tips for getting off to the right start with the new school year from the folks offering the giveaway. I will say that I agree with every one of them, especially eating a healthy breakfast with protein and flossing every day!  I see such a difference in my kids when they get a full night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast.  And they sleep better when they have had some exercise.

"While most people think of New Year’s resolutions in January, for families and kids, the new year really starts in the fall. The start of a new school year is a great time for families to make their resolutions to set healthy routines that will serve them all year long.

Make breakfast a priority. Kids who start the day right with a solid breakfast keep their minds on their studies and not on their stomachs. Plan ahead to have some quick, easy breakfasts that are high in protein and whole grains and low in sugar (for example, Van’s Natural Foods 8 Whole Grains Pancakes and Waffles, or its latest better-for-you option, Ancient Grains cereal featuring 6g of protein and 5g of fiber), and make sure your morning routine includes time for kids to eat.

Have happier trips to the dentist. The morning rush can make time for brushing and flossing scarce. Plan time for kids to brush their teeth before school and add a Plackers Kids flosser, in fun animal shapes and tasty berry flavors, to help keep the dentist’s drill at bay all year long.

Go to bed earlier. A good night’s sleep is important for concentration and mood. Reading and other quiet activities before bedtime help children wind down better than TV or video games.

Exercise. Kids who play outdoors after school, whether in organized school or community sports or just with friends at the local park, are less likely to gain weight than kids who flop on the couch for hours of TV, and they have an easier time falling asleep at bedtime because they are actually tired.

Healthier eating. Lunches and afterschool snacks don’t have to include chips, cookies and sodas. Healthy snacks like cheese sticks, cut-up fruits, veggies and dip, frozen yogurt, whole-grain versions of kid favorites like Goldfish are just a few ideas for kids who need a snack between and dinner."

ENTER TO WIN: To enter to win one of the prize packs, share a tip for making back to school easier on the kids (and the parents) in the comments section below.

I will randomly pick the 5 winners on Tuesday, August 21 at 1:00 pm and post  the winning usernames soon after 1:00. Good luck!

We always lay out our close before bed that night. Backpack are packed up when homework in finished and if there is a favorite tv show we record it and watch the next day.

Collect empty reusable containers for the kids as soon as they get home.... don't wait until later!

In order to make going back to school easier for the kids I alway make sure that they get plenty of rest and send them off with a healthy breakfast. I think starting off with a good breakfast sets the pace for a great day.To make things easier for myself as a parent I see that once they get home and have a quick snack they get right to their homework. Getting it done before tv or play time not only ensures they do a better job because they are still focused, but it also means there is less arguing over them getting it done later.

For kids, summer can mean playing outside until dark, staying up late, and sleeping in. After the flexibility of summer schedules, children and their parents often struggle with getting back into the school-year routine. The change in seasons and going back to school usually mean a stricter time schedule as well as a new teacher or caregiver. These changes can cause stress and anxiety for children of all ages. To ease the transition between summer and school schedules, your kids should begin going to bed and getting up on a school schedule, about 2 weeks before school starts.

Do not allow kids to snack after dinner. They tend to have a more restful sleep.

Tip for making back to school easier for KIDS: Prepare everything the night before and make sure your kids get in bed at the established BEDTIME...no exceptions!!

Tip for making back to school easier for PARENTS: Back to Basics (advice you received when they were infants...SLEEP when they SLEEP. That being said go to bed when they go to bed or soon after. No use in having kids that all set and ready to go in the morning and the PARENT is dragging and all sleepy and tired in the morning....Your rest is just as important as the kids.....

I always have the kids select five (5) outfits and I iron them on Sunday evening, also I make sure all the things they need for the next day are ready before we sit down for dinner. :)

Get up 10 minutes earlier then you think. 10 minutes make a while lotta difference!

The whole family needs to start going to bed earlier. Easier said than done.

Pick out outfits for the whole week on Sunday so getting ready in the morning is faster.

My biggest tip for making going back to school easier... is listen to Faye and read her blogs. Omg this lady has totally gotten me looking at things a whole lot differently. I went to one of her workshops, and now I implement most of her ideas.

start next Monday waking up early as if a school day. buy stock in school supplies that students typically need. Pencil, paper, folders...cheaper now than later. stock up on snacks. little kiddos need daily snacks.

I take a picture of the books/folders my daughter needs to bring home each night so she remembers to put everything in her backpack.

I would day planning--Have everything packed and ready to go as soon as possible and in the car for the next day or by the door for the bus.

netwa, how on earth do you manage to keep cooked bacon in the frig for a week? My husband would have it gone in no time and tell the kids to eat a bowl of cereal!

Pack all items they will need for class into the backpack the night before so you are not running around in the morning. I also make sure all the folders are signed.

Having outfits picked out the night before, including socks and shoes, saves us considerable time in the morning.

prepare, prepare, prepare and you will be less stressed! And you know that stressed spelled backwards is - desserts!

Have school supplies in once location, so kids don't have to run around looking for things.

Pack lunches and put out clothes the night before. Also I make extra for dinner so I can pack the leftovers for their lunch. I bought some igloo insulated containers at Target last year for about $10 each that can be microwaved in the morning so no transferring to stainless insulated containers. Kids get a hot lunch and I save money.

Keep a large family calendar on the fridge and color code it for each child. This makes it easier for them to know what to expect each week.

If your child wants a hot breakfast every morning like mine, cook the bacon in advance for the week. Place it in a ziploc bag in the fridge. All you have to do is scramble eggs each morning - which only takes a few minutes.

Lay out clothes the night before!

Take a short walk when the kids get home from school to get in some exercise but also to wind down after the day and talk about the homework before you guys get to work on it. Or even what they learned in school! It's a great way to re-cap and keep the kids remembering things.

Freeze the drink (usually capri sun) so it will not only be cold at lunch, but can be used to keep other items cool. Set a good example for a set bedtime. My kids until they were in high school had a bedtime of 9pm. But you have to stick with it, some sports activities run late and if mom & dad stay out for something the kids will always want to stay up later.

Pack lunches the night before

My kids aren't old enough for school yet, but I can say that we get out of the house more easily on the days when I put their shoes on while they are still in their high chairs! So much easier!

My boys pick out and iron the clothes for the school week.

Makes the kids lunches fun and with variety.........and make them the night before, too! Example: 'decorate' bananas with fun faces which you can do with a black marker. =)

Another thing is have easy to get to Fruit and healthy snacks available when the kids get home that way - they will just grab one of them instead of something not so good for them - Like have a basket on the counter with healthy gummie snacks or fresh fruit 0-apples, pears banannas etc.....

Freeze your drink ( juice pack) and then use it to keep the lunch cool

Pick out the clothes the night before.

make lunches and set out the outfit for the next day the night before.

Clothes are laid out the night before & we keep backpacks & stuff by the front door to grab on our way out. :)

Pack lunches the night before--- Makes for a stress-free morning.

Our girls pick out clothes and make their lunches the night before.

pack lunches the night before. freeze pbj sandwiches keep lunches cold and taste great.

We always plan out school lunches for the week and we pack the lunches every night together as part of our routine.

Create a simple schedule for the family.

We have the lunches made the night before and all that is needed is to add the ice packs. Makes the morning run smoother. Also, when time permits, the kids eat breakfast at school, can't beat the cost.

Have a routine and stick to it.

I try to put a hand written note in their lunches - usually on colorful paper.

We pick out 5 outfits for the week and then she can choose in the morning which one she wants. This saves so much time for us. Also, she usually eats the school lunch most days. I allow her to pick a sweet snack to take to eat after her lunch.

When my teens were little I would let them pick out something special for the first day of school. My daughter usually asked me to curl her hair (she had such gorgeous long blonde hair, but putting curlers in at night is time consuming, so we reserved it for special occasions). My son usually wanted something special for lunch, which means baked goods, so we'd bake up a batch of whatever he wanted for him to snack on at school.

I would also make special breakfast, whatever they wanted. Bacon and eggs, pancakes, muffins, things I generally did not have time for most mornings, but I would make a point to do it on the first day of school.

Oh, and I'd always leave a note in their lunch boxes on the first day.

I make a schedule for schools days that my 1st grader (5 years old) understands. This way she knows what is expected and makes the day much smoother. She has her morning "chores"(get dressed, brush hair, wash face, brush teeth, make bed). After school, homework comes first, then gymnastics/dance. If she doesn't get her homework done, she misses out on her activity. She knows school is #1.

Cut up fresh fruit and veggies for snacks the night before as part of dinner preparation. The kitchen is already being used and has to be cleaned, so get it out of the way to save cleaning time and possibly dishes. Plus, you will be more likely to grab that healthy snack instead of per packaged junk food!

Pack a surprise in the book bag. It'll make the day a lot easier. Plus, have a suprise when they come home on the first day!

If your children carry lunch to school let them pick which day what they want to carry for lunch it makes them feel special that they are helping in the decision making.

When we got each month's school lunch menu, the kiddos would each put their initials on the days they would like to eat the school lunch. Then I'd know which days we were packing lunches, and was able to have a good selection of each mama-required category of fresh items available (protein, veg, fruit, dairy), taking their individual preferences into account.

Happy Mama, Happy Kiddos, at least in the lunch arena. ;-)

Have your child(children) pick out their clothes the night before and have everything....including shoes and socks...right ready to go. No more morning "search to find"s!
