    Yes, jkay, I think you are right - the Mastercard GC's do have a fee and that is probably what you were charged. Usually store GC's don't have a fee, but the Visa and MC's usually do. I only buy the store specific gift cards because there are no fees for those (usually).

    Great Freebie from the Savory Spice Shop...free spices for you & a friend!

    Go to their Facebook site (you may need to 'like' them), click on it, they will send you an email confirmation, print that out & take it to their store, and they'll give you a baggie of spices (two together, one for you, one to give a friend). I got the Coastal Bay mixture, can't wait to try it!

    Hurry, expires on 6/19

    Maybe the $4.95 on the Mastercard was a fee ?

    Faye, did you buy gift cards at FL for the $10 off deal? They charged me tax on the 3 MasteCard gift cards I bought. This happened at two diiferent FL stores in Cary.

    jkay - I have never been taxed on gift cards.

    The NCDOR indicates that newspapers sold at vending machines are exempt from tax & those sold over the counter can be taxed.

    Here is the NCDOR link:

    Here is the wording:

    A. G.S. 105-164.13(28) exempts from sales tax sales of newspapers by newspaper street vendors, by newspaper carriers making door-to-door deliveries, and by means of vending machines and sales of magazines by magazine vendors making door-to-door sales.
    B. Newspapers
    1. The following retail sales by newspaper publishers located inside or outside North Carolina and engaged in business in North Carolina are taxable:
    a. over the counter sales;
    b. sales by subscription delivered through the mail to subscribers in North Carolina.
    5. Over-the-counter sales of newspapers made by retailers such as newsstands, grocery stores, restaurants, drug stores, etc. are taxable."

    faulkner - if it is a coupon for $$ off your next purchase (like $5 off a $25 purchase), than HT should take it.

    I have a couple of questions.
    Is there supposed to be tax charged on newspapers?
    Is there supposed to be tax charged on gift cards?
