And that's what I normally tell them if they act like they have a problem adjusting the "coupon value", or just hand keying it. If they start giving me static about it, I make it clear that I will just void off my whole order and go somewhere else. It's not that big a deal.
The cashier technically doesn't need a override or manager's approval and can just hand key the $1 coupon with no problem. Lowes is going to get reimbursed a $1, so it's shouldn't be a big deal. If the cashier hand keys it at .99 cents though, then the register will automatically double it.
In any case, it's not the consumer's fault that their system won't take the coupon. Always look at it this way, a coupon is just a voucher from the manufacturer that works the same as cash. It's not a "discount". They are getting paid the value of the coupon. So really all stores should apply all coupon overage toward your subtotal.
