Rebate Run-a-Rounds

Rebates can be enticing! But you can also quickly end up in a rebate run-a-round! Open just about any sale booklet and you’ll see a rebate offer! Retailers use them to try to get you to buy everything from appliances to computers to cell phones! But what do you really have to do to collect your rebate? Thursday at 5, we’re looking into the millions of dollars in rebates that are never redeemed and the North Carolina laws that can help protect you! In the meantime, have you experienced a rebate run-around? What did it take to finally get your money?

    1) Make copies of everything (bar codes, forms, product box or end panel (if feasable)). Keep original packaging if possible.
    2) mail Return Reciept Requested - they can't say they never got it.
    3) Don't wait until the last minute.
    4) If in doubt as to exactly what proof they need - send everything with a number/bar code/description/etc. (see #1)
    5) use a rebate monitoring site (if available for manufacturer)
    6) If turned down, start at #1 again - usually pays off.
