I got promoted but my pay hasn't increased. Should it?
Question: I was a Teacher Assistant for 13 years, but recently I got promoted to a
Data Manager. Currently, I'm still on the Teacher Assistant pay scale
level. Shouldn't I be on Data Manager's pay scale? In addition, I will
graduate in May 2007 with an Associate Science Degree do you think that
will make a difference?
Answer: This probably depends on your employer's policies. If the employer's policies require your pay to be changed, then you should be paid at the other rate. Whether or not the additional degree will make a difference is really up to your employer.
Note, however, that your employer cannot pay you differently than other employees based on personal characteristics, such as race, sex, religion, color, age, disability, or veteran status. If you believe that you are being paid the lower rate due to one of those reasons, you should contact the EEOC at 1-800-669-400.
Good luck and I hope this has helped.
