Do employers have the authority to mandate when you take your vacation time?
Question: Do employers have the authority to mandate when you take your vacation time? Our small office of 18 employees states that you must take vacation in 1/2 day increments and you are allowed to take vacation around a holiday only once during the year. We do have an office manual which stipulates this regarding time around a holiday and the 1/2 day increments on time off.
Answer: Yes, private employers can make such rules even if they seem unfair to you. Both you and the employer are at will and you both can end the relationship whenever you want except for an unlawful reason. Unless you or a union has a contract agreement with the employer in which it promises not to do that. Government employers are also able to make such rules but if the rule seems to arbitrary, then those government employees with "tenure" or vested job rights may be able to grieve
