Question: What characteristics of thunderstorms determine the polarity of most lightning strikes?

Answer: Some of the environmental factors that can play a role in the polarity of a given strike include height above ground of the point of initiation of the lightning flash, the intensity of vertical motions in the thundercloud, altitude of the freezing level, moisture content within the storm cloud, the direction and speed of winds and how they vary with height, and topography below and near the storm.
