54 arrested in Durham during protest for higher minimum wage

According to authorities, 54 demonstrators were charged with impeding the flow of traffic while they protested for a minimum wage of at least $15 per hour.

Priscilla Hoyle, a mother of three, said it is hard trying to survive on minimum wage.

"It is hard, trying to survive. I have to work three jobs to try to make ends meet and I still don't be able to with having to pay my rent, lights, water and then my cell phone bills and trying to take care of my children," Hoyle said. "It is really hard trying to work on nothing bur minimum wage."

Altha Cravey said despite the arrests, protests will not let up.

"We are going to be in the streets more and more and getting arrested more and more to show people the power of these alliances," Cravey said. "Connecting immigrant struggles to worker struggled."

Reverend William Barber, President of the state chapter of the NAACP was also in the crowd.
