4 Charged After Cockfighting Ring Busted

Four men were arrested and 54 roosters were impounded Saturday when a cockfighting ring was discovered behind a home in Seven Springs, authorities said.

SEVEN SPRINGS, N.C. — Four men were arrested and 54 roosters were impounded Saturday when a cockfighting ring was discovered behind a home in Seven Springs, authorities said.

Members of the Wayne County Department of Animal Control and deputies with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office raided a residence on the 2400 block of Zion Church Road at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday following a tip, authorities said.

Metal gaffs, spurs and gloves were confiscated during the raid, authorities said.

Fidel Gonzales, 43, of Clinton, German Lopez, 30, of Albertson, Janier Herrera, 47, of Seven Springs, and Atanasio Mujica, 48, of Dudley , were charged with felony cockfighting.

The roosters were being held in a safe location in Wayne County, authorities said.
