3-year-old struck by car in Fuquay-Varina

— A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was struck by a car late Sunday.

According to officers with the Fuquay-Varina Police Department, the child was with his family at a restaurant located at 1260 N. Main Street when he ran from the restaurant parking lot, crossed the sidewalk and then ran into the road, entering the path of an oncoming car.

The car, which contained a male driver and no other occupants, struck the child.

The driver stopped his car, officials said, and a nearby officer stopped to provide assistance.

The child received CPR at the scene and remains in critical condition at Duke Hospital. The driver was not injured.

According to officials, the child's family ran into the roadway to try and stop him prior to the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
