3-year-old dies after accidental shooting at Lumberton store

A 3-year-old died Sunday after accidentally shooting himself at a store in Lumberton, police said.

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A 3-year-old died Sunday after accidentally shooting himself at a store in Lumberton, police said.

Officers responded to the 2200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at about 11 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report about an accidental shooting.

The 3-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said the boy's father, 56-year-old Manal Abdelaziz, is the owner and manager of the store.

The handgun had been stored behind the counter in the business, police said.

The Robeson County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the incident to determine if charges will be filed.
