3-year-old dies after accidental shooting at Lumberton store

Posted January 11, 2016

— A 3-year-old died Sunday after accidentally shooting himself at a store in Lumberton, police said.

Officers responded to the 2200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at about 11 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report about an accidental shooting.

The 3-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said the boy's father, 56-year-old Manal Abdelaziz, is the owner and manager of the store.

The handgun had been stored behind the counter in the business, police said.

The Robeson County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the incident to determine if charges will be filed.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Lumberton Police Department at 910-671-3845.

The charge is failure to secure a firearm when a minor is likely or can reasonably be anticipated to gain access to the firearm. Grossly negligent storage of a gun.

these "accidental" shootings need to quit being called an accident....charges should ALWAYS be filed!
