Posted — UpdatedAPEX, N.C. — More than 220 Progress Energy customers were without power in Apex Tuesday morning, according to the company.
A fire at the Apex substation apparently caused the power outages, officials said.
"About 4:45 a.m., I heard two small booms followed about 30 seconds later by two more small booms," according to a viewer who e-mailed WRAL News. "I presume these were the transformers blowing but of course we don't know why. This is in the Perry Farms area, south of 55 near S. Hughes Street."
