ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — A fatal crash involving one car closed eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the Interstate 85 split in Orange County Sunday evening.

Officials said a Ford Explorer carrying a female driver and two male passengers was headed north on I-85 near mile marker 163 when it lost control, overcorrected, hit an embankment, overturned three times and ejected the man sitting in the front passenger seat.

The man, identified as Cameron A. Bass, 21, from Durham, died in the wreck. The other two people in the car were injured, but not seriously, officials said.

Charges are pending against the driver, who said she hydroplaned in the rain.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m., and the road remained closed for about two hours.

No further details were immediately available.
