CARTHAGE, N.C. — Investigators have charged a 20-year-old Moore County man with statutory rape of a 15-year-old from the Carthage area.

Tyler Joel Whitaker, of 274 White Oak Road, was charged with two counts each of statutory rape, abduction of a child from school property without parental permission, taking indecent liberties with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The statutory rape charge stipulates that the defendant is between four and six years older than the victim.

Whitaker was being held in the Moore County Jail under a $200,000 secured bond Monday afternoon. His first court appearance was scheduled for Oct. 13.

Whitaker has sentenced to probation in February for communicating threats in Moore County, according to state Department of Correction records. He served two months in jail in 2007 for violating his probation for assaulting an officer and/or state employee.
